Sustainability

Together for the next generation

Fjätervålen was founded in the 1960s, and much has changed since then and will continue to change in the future. We know that the future holds both challenges and opportunities when it comes to the climate we live and work in. That is why we want to do our best to develop the facility in a direction that allows us to continue offering nature experiences and relaxation, in harmony with our unique mountain environment and the local community.

Our vision is to become the most sustainable mountain destination in the Nordic region. We know that this is a lofty goal and that we have a long way to go, but we see it as a unique opportunity to do the right thing and contribute to sustainable development. We are humbled by the challenges we face, but if you don’t set high goals, you won’t get very far. Work is currently in full swing on our new detailed plan and sustainability plan, and the goal is to build a climate-smart mountain village that will eventually produce more energy than it consumes. In 2021, a sustainability analysis of Fjätervålen was carried out by the GSTC (Global Sustainable Tourism Council) and Visit Dalarna. We are now using that report as the basis for our continued work on our sustainability plan.

Some examples of what we are already doing today:

  • All electricity used in the facility is 100% renewable and comes primarily from the Solparken solar park in Säve.
  • We strive to reduce our energy consumption and the amount of waste we produce, and to find more efficient and environmentally friendly alternatives.
  • We have installed charging stations for electric cars and have initiated a project to expand charging options within the cottage village by fall 2022.
  • The snow groomers use a GPS system to make grooming as efficient as possible.
  • We use eco-labeled products and as few environmentally hazardous substances as possible.
  • We work together with other operators in the destination to improve public transport, infrastructure, and service levels for the local population.
  • Waste sorting is available, and guests are informed and encouraged to sort their waste. Waste from the facility is also sorted.
  • Local produce and handicrafts are available to purchase in our local shop. Products with a short shelf life are discounted or used in our restaurant to avoid being thrown away.
  • We take on interns every season to get more young people into working life.
  • When candidates have equivalent skills, we prioritize hiring people who live in the local area.
  • The illuminated trail has LED lighting, and other lighting is replaced as it breaks.
  • Free lift passes are offered to companions, and we transport guests who are unable to reach the top themselves when the opportunity arises.
  • We participate in the Panta mera project, where we donate the deposit money to children’s and youth activities at our local sports clubs.
  • The inn works daily with a flexible menu to use ingredients as efficiently as possible and avoid waste. Vegetarian options are always available.
  • We comply with applicable environmental legislation and strive to continuously improve our environmental work, inspired by the strategy for sustainable tourism, the UN’s global goals, and SLAO’s roadmap for sustainable ski resorts.
  • We are continuously working to develop sustainable activities such as dog sledding tours, guided summit tours, new hiking trails, and more.

With our vision as a foundation and an ever-evolving sustainability plan, we look forward with curiosity to everything the future has to offer!
